ATHLETIC DEFEAT FOXTON Conditions were ideal for football when Athletic met Foxton on the Levip; Domain on Saturday afternoon last. The teams were evenly matched in both departments, the final score being more i r . the home team’s favour on account of the many mistakes made by Foxton when the play was in a dangerous position for them, particularly in the first half. Accurate play by the visitors in the second spell made the match more even. There were many occasions when both teams showed they were as likely to score from a defensive position, by taking the play .the whole length of the field. The teams lined out as follows

Athletic : Galpin, Sorensen, Barley, Modelings, Black, Coles, Galloway, J. and E. Devonshire, Frew, Lcgcr, Close, Bateman, O’Donnell and Milroy. Foxton ; Hutchins, D. Cry stall, Porter, J. Crystall, Monahan, J. Hurini, E. Farata, Taylor, Robinson, Wright, Graham, Vertongcn, Hine, Melton, and Poto.

Athletic won the toss and the game opened with, midfield, play until Hurini intercepted and brought play to the blue line, where Porter secured a try. Foxton 3, Athletic nil. Neither side secured advantage for the next ten minutes, Avlien from a line-out in the yellow half, Galloway gained possession, passed to Cole ,who cut out the opposition for Cole to score and Galloway to add the.extras. Athletic 5, Foxton 3. Another period of midfield play followed the kick off. Monahan, Hinde and Wright made a good run for the visitors, but Gallorvay cleared sucessfully. From a line-out inside the yellow territory, the Foxton backs gained possession, but fumbled their passes. Cole, Meddings and Black made a good combined effort, the last-named going over. The kick failed. Athletic 8, Foxton 3. Blue hooked the ball from a set scrum soon after the kick off and Galloway set his backs going. Black kicked and Monahan mishandled in taking the ball. Sorensen was in a handy position and secured the leather and made a good dash for three more points. Athletic 11, Foxton 3. This try was quickly followed by another Scored by A. Bateman who was given thd ‘ball by Devonshire, and before the end of the spell blue took advantage of a mis-kick by Monagan in his owm twenty-five and Meddings added a further try. Athletic 17, Foxton 3.

The second spell opened with Poston making a successful attack, culminating in Crystall going over from close forward play on the blue line. Athletic 17/ Foxton 6. Play after the kick off settled down in neutral territory. Hutchins and Porter showed good combination, but Galpin repulsed the attack and exciting moments followed close on each other as play moved quickly from the one quarter to the other. A lineout in the yellow naif finally saw some good passing by the Athletic backs and O’Donell added a try. Athletic 20, Foxton 6. After the kick off Hurini converted a penalty for the visitors and the home team replied with a runaway try scored by Barley, who made a brilliant interception of Crystall’s pass. Galloway converted, making the final score : Athletic 25, Foxton 9.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL,

On Wednesday next, at 1.30 p.m., the Levin District High School First XV. will meet that of St. Patrick’s College (Silverstream) in their annual fixture. Mr. H. Jacob will referee and the match will be staged on the Levin Domain.
