Dr. Sydney Townend, of Leeds, has been appointed to the staff of the New Zealand Wool Manufacturers ’ Research Association. Dr. Townend has had experience of wool manufacturing problems in both America and England. lie Is expected to arrive in New Zealand in September. He will inspect on his way improvements made in France, Poland and Belgium in wool machinery.
The death occurred suddenly on Monday night of Mr. Laurence Keelan MeMurrich, chief engineer of the Union Steam Ship Company’s inter-island cx press steamer Rangatira. Mr. MeMurrich was on duty on Monday at Hs ship; which is undergoing a survey, seemingly in his usual state of health.
Mr. R. M. McKenzie, Manawatu’s representative in the All Black team shortly to visit Australia, is to receive the congratulations of the Manawata Rugby Union on having been selected and also on his appointment as vicecaptain. Speaking at last night’s meeting of the union at Palmerston North, Mr. A. M. Ongley, the president, said that Mr. McKenzie had created a record unique in Manawatu Rugby history in that he had been selected for three overseas tours.
The death occurred in the Masterton Hospital early yesterday morning of Mr. George Thomas Allen, editor and proprietor of the Eketahuna Express, and one of the best-known and most highly respected residents of that district. The late Mr. Allen, who was a native of Taranaki and a member of one of the pioneer families of that province, started life as a farmer, but entered the newspaper business oyer thirty years ago in partnership with Mr. A. H. Vile, later taking oyer his partner’s interests. Mr. Adien was closely associated with the various activities for the advancement of the town and district and was universally esteemed for his likeable personality and generosity. Only two days before entering the hospital for a critical operation he was entertained by the members of the Eketahuna Club when a record gathering elected him a life member. His passing came as a great shock to residents of Eketahuna as a few days before his illness Mr. Allen appeared to be in the best of health. He is survived by his widow (who is a daughter of the late Mr. Henry Billons, of Palmerston North), a son, Mr. John Sheppard Allen (SjMney, N.S.W.), and a daughter, Mrs. 11. S. Aldrich (Hamilton). Mrs. W. A. Bwinbourn (Palmerston North) is a sister and Mr. Arthur Allen (Patea) a brother of the deceased. The interment will take place at Alton, Patea, on Friday.
