MAORI CHIEF'S DEATH.

FAMILY HISTORY RECALLED. With the death recently of Mr. Paora (Paul) Tamihana, chief of the NgatiHuia tribe, is recalled the interesting association of his family with this district. The deceased gentleman’s grandfather, Tamihana Te Hoia, w T as born at Rangiuru pa, near the sea at Otaki, and w r as chief of the Ngati-Huia tribe, a sub-tribe of the Ngati-Raukawas. He w'as a man of great will power and intelligence, and his personality was one dominated by leadership. From Otaki he came to live and rule his people at I’oroutawhao, where he was both feared and loved. He w r as married to Pirihira Pokotiraha and they had a family of two sons and three daughters. The eldest son died young and so did the daughters, leaving the youngest son j (ilirama), who married at an early age. However, on October 22nd, 1894, he died, and this was followed in May, 1904, by the death of the great Tamihana Te Hoia. Ilirama Tamihana Te Hoia had one son and throe daughters, the former being Mr. Paora Tamihana, whose death occurred a few days ago at the age of 47 years.

The late Mr. Pa ora Tamihana cared little for himself, but devoted most of his time to assisting others. He was particularly kind hearted and his death will be mourned by many. He is survived by three sons (Sam, George and Dawson) and two daughters (Waero and May). The title of chief passes to his eldest sou Sam Tamihana.
