QUEEN CARNIVAL NEWS.

POSITION OF CANDIDATES. FORTHCOMING FUNCTIONS. Now entering its fourth week of activity, the queen carnival is making highly satisfactory’ progress. Since last Thursday no more votes have been 'lodged and the position of the candi--1 dates remains as follows; Borough (Miss M. Blenkhorn), 4872; Sports (Miss M. Maclean), 3747; Maori (Mias Joyce Winiata), 3263. To-morrow in the vicinity of the Post Office a shop day is being held for the Borough candidate, and goods will be for sale. For the evening Queen •Joyce’s committee-have organised a jcard party and this function is to be held in the Regent Hall. - • • j Children will be at tthe Regent Hall an full force on Wednesday afternoon, where the Levin Women’s Institute is conducting a monster plain and fancy dress party. The proceedings commence at 2 p.m. and there will be fun and frolic for young and old alike. Good prizes for children of all ages are being given to those in the best fancy costumes, while a special prize is being offered for the most originally dressed boy and girl. Admission is Is for adults and 6d. for children, this small charge including afternoon tea. will be a well-stocked jumble stall and members of the institute are asked to bring .a plate.

One of the most popular events of the carnival season will undoubtedly bo the grand Highland ball for it is an innovation as far as Levin is concerned. Forty strong and in full dress, the. Palmerston North Highland Band will arrive early in the evening and from 7.30 to 8.15 p.m. will give a Drum Majorca display in Oxford Street. This alono will be a sight worth seeing*. They will then proceed to the Regent ball-room where the piping in of the chief and chieftains will take place, followed by the grand Highland march. The ball will commence about 8.30 p.m. and the music for the dancing will be provided by Gedson’s Aces. During the evening several Scottish ballets are to be presented by the pupils of Misses Jean and June Scott, of the northern city. This is a borough queen effort and. a special committee is at present busily engaged in decorating the hall, and making elaborate arrangements for the function.
