DOG WINS A WAR.
A tribal war between two fierce tribes in the mountains of Mandated New Guinea has been stopped—by a bull terrier. The dog belongs to Mr Michae.t Leahy, a gold miner. He was standing on a nearby hill watching the battle with the dog by his side. When four arrows whizzed by his .head, burying themselves in the ground close by M'r Leahy fired a couple of warning shots from his rifle. At the reports, his dog sprang to life. Seeing some of the natives running away, startled by the gunfire, the dog gave chase. Soon he was in the thick of the fight, upsetting man after man by throwing his heavy body against their legs. So many men fell that the attacking tribe took to their heels. Later in the day, a deputa tion from the victors entered Leahy’s camp carrying an exceptionally large pig. He offered payment for it, but the natives shook their heads. “No, no!” they cried. “There is no charge. This pig is for the dog. He won the war for us! ”
