(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WAIROA, Lust Night.

Excellent progress is being made with the construction of the huge viaduct over tile Alohaka gorge, one of' the biggest undertakings in connection with the East Coast railway. «o far very few difficulties have been met with and a start has been made with the erection of the first span of the bridge. Trains are running daily between Wairoa and Raupunga with material for the bridge and other jobs in connection with the railway and a good deal of machinery and supplies have been shipped to the various camps through Wai koko pu. One house to replace thosp destroyed by the earthquake at Mohaka has been built and materials are arriving for the construction of others. It cun now be claimed that the work is well under way and additional men are arriving

daily. Ten of the men employed on the viaduct had a rather unenviable expert* en.ee on Friday last. They were crossing the gorge in a cage on cables and when half way across and 35(1 feet above the river the cables became jambed. A cold southerly wind with hail and sleet added to their plight and many frantic efforts were made before the cableway* was m working order and the men were rescued little worse for their experience.
