- ' PENSIONS AMENDMENT BILL. (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Legislative Council met at 10.30 a.m. when (he Local Elections ami Polls Temporary Amendment Bill was passed. In moving the second reading of the Pensions Amendment Bill, Hon. M. Fagan said that the invalidity pension would bridge the gap that had existed in the pensions system. There was necessity for adequate population in New Zealand arid with suitable provision for people in old age, a person coming to New Zealand need have no fear for the future.
Hon. R. Masters said he Avas largely in sympathy with the legislation, but contended that the Government’s estimate of the extra cost of new pensions was too loav. • The total cost of the Pensions Bill would be nearer £7,000,000 than £5,500,000 as estimated. He would support a Natie«al superannuation scheme. The Council adjourned for luncheon.
