EARLY SETTLERS.

ANNUAL MEETING 'OF ASSOCIATION.

The annual meeting of the Early Settlers’ Association of Levin and district was held at the Borough Chambers last evening, there being a fair attendance of members, the Chairman, Mr. Sidney Hall, presiding. Before proceeding with' ■ the business, t,he Chairman referred to the loss suffered by the community by the death of Mr. E. Davies, a committeman, and also by the passing ofi several old settlers in the persons of Mesdames Collinson, Spencer, Davison, Plaster, and Best. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to their memory. ANNUAL REPORT. The Chairman then read the following annual report on the first year of the Association’s activities : In this our first year of office there is, as you are all aware, very little to report, with the exception of the Reunion, which took place on the 11th October, 1935, and was an undoubted success. A very large number of early settlers wore present and the whole function was characterised by a happy and friendly spirit and centred, as was right, round the honoured guests —Mrs. Granny Better and others. Visitors were present from as far north as Te Kuiti and as far South as Wellington, and a number of apologies were received from others on account of absence from the district and also because of illness. The Committee put in wonderful work and are to be congratulated on the success of the venture both financially and otherwise, the amount to credit being £7 14s sd. It was the intention of the Committee to meet in March last but owing to the proposed Borough Carnival it was decided not to suggest further activities this year, and the meeting was abandoned. It is suggested that if it is decided to hold a function this year some more lasting and expressive memento should be adopted to those to whom special honour is due. Election of Officers.

The election of officers resulted as follows :—Chairman, Mr. S. Hall; Committee, Mesdames Clark, MacDonald, Pink, Procter, Messrs Johnson, Parsons, Pink, Procter, and Salmons; honorary secretary and treasurer, Miss H. E. Bowen. General. It was decided to hold a re-umon, similar to that of last year, in the Eegent Hall on October 14. Committees were set up to deal with the various activities and to report progress at a meeting to be held on September 10, at 7.30 p.m.

A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded a very enthusiastic meeting.
