MANAWATU RIVER'S RAPID RISE.
POSSIBILITY OF FLOOS. Responding to the heavy rain on the- other side of the range yesterday the Alauawatu River, which has been almost at summer level for many weeks began to rise last evening - , and in the early hours of this morning there were indications that flood level might bo reached before daylight. The gnage at the Fitzheibert Bridge at 5 p.m. showed 2ft. Two hours inter hft. Min. was recorded, and by JO.MO the 7ft mark was passed. At 12.M0 the river had climbed to 10ft., and by I a.m. another six inches had been added. At 2 a.m. the river had passed the lift mark. Thus in three and a-half hours it had risen four feet, and showed every sign of going still higher. At Whirokino there was no sign of a rise this morning.
