BARTER CARS FOR WOOL.

AUSTRALIA REFUSES GERMAN OFFER

HOW AFRICA AND ARGF.NTIKT BENEFIT. (By Telegraph-Press Aasn.--Copyright) Received Tuesday, 9.5 p.m. LONDON, Feb. 3. The Australian Associated Press correspondent at Berlin says there is disappointment in official circles because the Australian Government not allowing a barter deal of motor-cars for wool. Similar deals between Germany and other countries are being negotiated to the extent of hundreds weekly. Germany is anxious to facilitate the direct import of Australian unscoured Merino n- d other high grade wool as far as can be reconciled with Dr. Schacht's plan under which Germany will only import from each country to the extent of exports thereto. It is pointed out that South Africa immediately reacted to the barter deal and as a result while Australian woo! sales to Germany shrank to one quarter and New Zealand's to one tenth, South

Africa's have increased more than 33 per cent and Argentine's have increased Gl per cent.

CANBERRA, Feb. 4,

The Minister in charge of Trade Treaties (Mr. Gullett) described as impracticable the proposals advanced recently that Australian wool be exchanged for German motor-cars. He said the Commonwealth Government could not give the least support to a barter arrangement with one foreign wool-buying country unless the benefits of such a barter system were extended to all Australia's good foreign woolbuying customers.
