SOUTHDOWNS REALISE UP TO 260 GUINEAS

Breeders from all parts of New Zen land were present on Saturday at Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd. 's saleroom in Wellington to participate in the sale of imported Southdown and Uyeland rams brought to New Zealand recently by .Mr G. Fawkes, of Killeymoon, Bulls. The shipment comprised 19 Southdown rams and 3 Jiyelands, all of which were personally selected in England from the leading studs there by Mr Fawkes. Prior to reaching New Zealand the sheep were quarantined in Australia for three months. They entered tne Loudon quarantine station on July 31 last, and came out of quarantine in New Zealand on January 31, the expenses involved over this period of six months mounting up to a very largo sum. However, substantial prices were paid by New Zealand breeders on Saturday at the sale, three of the outer Sout.hdowns realising L'SOgns. or over apiece, and one of the ram lambs realising over 2(J(Jgns. Nine of the Southdown rams, rising two years old, averaged 17-l?.gns. each, and six, rising one year old, averaged llOlgns., while the three Kyeland ram lambs averaged 70gns. apiece. Three of the Southdowns went to the Auckland province, two to Southland, two to Otago, one to Canterbury, one ,to llawke's Bay, and six remain in the Wellington province; while one of the Ryelands goes to Canterbury and two go to the Maria watu.

The bargain of the sale, conducted by Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., and Ualgety and Co., Ltd., is said t'j lie the first ram sold, Sandringham 11V of J«i:»-I-, bred by his late Majesty, King George V, which \vas bought by -Mr J. U. Sell', I'apatoetoe, Auckland, I'of 250gns. This was a grand headed ram and was one of: the most symmetrical ranis it would be possible to see. Another great ram was Luton 1100 515 of W.'A, bred by Lady Ludlow, Luton 1100, which was purchased by Messrs Ellis Bros., Fvilieymooii, Bulls, for '"SO gns. This was a very thick sheep, short on the leg, and both his sire ami dam had been champions at the Royal Show of England. The top pric !' the sale was 2o'ogns., paid for Luton 1100 551 of l!)o4, also bred by Lady Ludlow, which was purchased by Mr 11. B'. Stuckey, c/o. Masscy College, I'almerston North. This was a magnificent ram, also sired by the English Koyal champion, while the ram was himself a prizewinner at the Royal. One of the bargains of the sale was the purchase of Upper Swell 25 of 1934 at 150gns. by Mr J. S. Hunt, of Pembroke. This ram was a prize-wan-ner at the Royal Show and had already sired prize-winning lambs at the Oxfordshire and Three Counties Show. Another good purchase was of the ram lamb, Suiulringham 12 of 1935, by Mill. J. Andrews, of Mahcno, at loOgns. This was a magnificent type, while his sire and dam's sire were both Royu! champions in England. The keenest bidding of the sale came near the end of the day. when the ram lamb, Upper Swell 54 of 1!);'.;,, bred by Mr W. E. 11. Hebblethwaite. Upper Swell, entered the ring. This very well-balanced, low-set ram was finally purchased by Mr W. Falconer, of the Southland Frozen Meat Co., Ltd., at 2logns., a great price tor a u-ani of his age. He is full of great blood. It was notable . that previous buyers .and importers of English Southdowns were very much in evidence at the sale, realising by past I experience the value of high-class English blood.

All the Ryeland rani lambs realised the same money, Air J. Red, of Ash hurst, securing the Royal winning ram, Holmelacy Natty Man, while Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., Christchurch, secured Holmelacy National, and Massey College secured Holmelacy Non-Stop. The sale realised 24S0gns. The joint auctioneers report the sale prices as follow: — Southdowns Gns. Sandriiigham 117 of 1934, to Mr J. R.
