WELLINGTON, Last Night
In the Supreme Court to-day the jury returned a verdict of guilty in a case in which Percy William Mills "was charged with false pretence. Mr. P. S. K. Macassey, Crown Prosecutor, said on July 1 accused called on Daniel McTaggart, butcher, of Featherston, and said he represented the Manawatu Skin and Hide Company giving as its address 75 Campbell street, Palmerston North. On July she arranged for the purchase of 283 sheepskins, five cow hides and a vealer hide. The price to be paid was £9B 6s. Accused took delivery and nothing .more was heard of Mm. On the same day accused sold the skins to a man named Dewe for £45. Evidence would be given that there, was no such company as tht; Manawatu Skin and Hide Company.
Mr. P. Verschaffelt, for accused, said the purchase was made on July 7 and accused was to have paid on July 12. but in the interim he was arrested on another charge.
