RISE IN WOOL PRICE.

EXCEEDS GROWERS’ EXPECTATIONS. CORRIEDALE HOGGET MAKES 19£d. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. The first Christchurch wool sale of the season was held to-day. The demand exceeded the expectations of growers and the sale was keen with a substantial increase in prices on those ruling last year. The advance for super wools ranged from 3d to Id per pound or about 30 per cent, and for average and fine wools from 2d to 3d per pound. There was a recovery on the rates ruling at Napier. The top price of the sale was I9kl for a lot of Corriedale hogget wool, but other clips of Corriedale made 17d to IStd and even ISjfd.

Keen interest was shown in the sale as there was some concern lest the casing for crossbred wool in the concluding stages of the London sales and the reaction at the Wellington sale last week would be reflected in more cautious bidding. Any fears that these developments would affect this auction were quickly removed. The demand for super wools was very keen from the outset and though there was an erratic market for some medium wools prices generally were substantially in advance cf brokers’ valuations and better than vendors expected. The wool was described by a buyer of many years’ experience as the best he had ever seen at a first auction in Christchurch. It was well grown, bright and dean, with less dust than usual. The circle of buyers completely filled the benches and there wore buying points which had been comparaliveiy little in the market in recent years.

A total of J 0,240 oales was offered and 1-1,05 S sold, also 843 privately. Tiio hardening tendency noted on the previous day was continued, pricer, generally showing a recovery from the decline reported at the opening of the present series
