Into the presence of one hundred Peers in scarlet and ermine, four advisory Lords, and Justices Branson, Goddard, Swift and Charles, of the Black Rod, was ushered Lord de Clifford, appearing before the House of Lords on a charge of manslaughter. Bowing to the vacant throne he submitted himself to judgment by his Peers, over whom Lord Ilarlsham presided, otherwise the proceedings were like an ordinary court.
