TO-DAY’S POLLING.

WEATHER FAVOURS ELECTORS UNPRECEDENTED INTEREST IN CAMPAIGN. RESULTS TO BE SHOWN AT “CHRONICLE” OFFICE TO-NIGHT. Although somewhat cool, the weather most fortunately cleared for the general election to-day, and a steady stream of electors visited the Levin District High School, the Levin polling centre for the Manawatu electorate, for the purpose of recording their votes. Pour class rooms have been utilised at the school as booths, other polling-places in the southern portion of the electorate being at Poroutawhao', Koputaroa, Shannon and Makerua.

As part of the Otaki electorate, several booths have been established outside the Levin borough boundary, voters being enaJbled to exercise their privilege at Mr J. J. Gallagher’s residence, Queen Street East, Mr C. Amos’s residence, C. D. Farm, the office of the Weraroa Boys’ Training Farm and the public schools at Ohau and Ihakara.

The poll closes at 7 p.m., and the results from the smaller booths should be available within half an hour, and those from the larger (booths in Mauav/atu at eight o’clock.

The polling in Levin is proving considerably brisker than on any previous occasion, the number of votes recorded at the school by 2.30 this afternoon being in the neighbourhood of 900, thus instancing the particular interest which has been aroused by this contest. At the 1931 election 700 persons only had exercised their franchise at that hour. A particular feature of the occasion is the large number of cars being used by supporters of the various candidates to transport electors to the booths.

Arrangements have been made by the “IClxronicle” to obtain all details from every polling-booth in both Otaki and Mananvatu electorates l , (together with progress reports and final figures from all other electorates in New Zealand, and as these figures come to •hand they will be immediately posted on large hoardings facing the street. Radio and loud speaker installations will also' be in operation •to give the best possible service throughout the evening and to keep electors informed upon the situation. NATIONAL BROADCAST OF RESULTS. LEADERS TO SPEAK DURING EVENING. WELLINGTON, This Lay. Arrangements have been made by the New Zealand Broadcasting Board to give a National service to-night in respect of the election results from 7.30 to 8.30 p.m., when the four main stations will broadcast results individually.

Prom 8.30 p.m, onward, broadcasting will be taken over by 2YA Wellington, which station will be rebroadcast by IYA, SYA and 4YA. In addition to actual voting results from every electorate, returns of Party strengths will 'be transmitted from time to time.

Arrangements have been made for the Party leaders to speak through the Board’s four main stations. The Prime Minister Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, will speak from Wellington at 10.45 p.m. the Minister of Finance, Hon. J. G. Coates, from Dargaville at 11 p.m,, the leader of the Labour Party, Mr M. J. Savage, from Auckland at 11.15 p.m., and the leader of the Democrat Party, Mr T. C. A. MAORI ELECTION. MR TAITE TE TOMO DEFEATED. MR. T. RATANA WINS WESTERN MAORI SEAT. Great interest was taken last evening in the elections for the four Maori constituencies where the split vote promised to make the contests particularly interesting. Three of the four sitting members, Sir Apirana Ngata, Mr. T. Henare and Mr. Tirikatene, are elected, but the Nationalist member for this district, Mr. Taite te Tomo, of Halcomhe, on the preliminary count, lost his seat to the Ratana candidate, Mr. T. Ratana, who secured a majority of 47 votes. Vote-splitting has been responsible for Mr. te Tomo’s altered position and as the Government may have to depend on the Maori members for its majority in the new House the position is a most Intriguing one. Details of the voting are as follow: NORTHERN MAORI. *Henare, T. (National) 3159 Paikea, P. (Ratana) 2333 Parore, L. W. (Democrat) .. 319 Taylor, D, W. (Independ.) .. 235 Waitehira, H. W.
