STEAM PUNT FOR WELLINGTON'S ELECTRICITY.
EVANS BAY ADDITIONS (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. The extension of its Evans Bay power plant and station at a cost of about £175,000 has been decided upon by the Wellington City Council. Tenders have been let for the purchase of a 15,000 k.w. Parsons turbo-generator of British manufacture for approximately £50,000 New Zealand currency and for two Swiss-made boilers, costing together, it is understood, about £55,000. The balance of £175,000 will be absorbed mainly in additions to the power-house buildings. The object of the scheme is to bring the station up to adequate proportions for handling the city's power requirements in the event of a failure of the Government supply and the secondary purj>oso is to use the station as an argument in bargaining with the Government for cheaper electricity.
