SOCIAL SIDELIGHTS.

Mr. E. Robinson, of Oha,kea, is in Levin for a few days. Mr and Mrs N. MoNair Thomson are Levin visitors to Wellington this weekend. Mr Erring Aagaard was a Christehurch visitor to Levin last week-end, being the guest of Mr and Mrs Arno Larsen, Bartholomew Road, Mr. P. Hazelwood, after spending ;i holiday in Palmerston North, is in Levin on a visit before returning to his home in Ohakea. Mr and Mrs 11. J. Rees, of Palmerston North, are the guests of Mr and Mrs G. W. Wilson, Winchester Street, for the week-end. Miss Phyllis Foss, after a brief visit to her parents, Mr and Mrs R. J. Foss, returned to Wellington during the week. Messrs E. J. Stanley and McCabe, of the stair-of the Boys' Training Farm, have been advised of their transfer to Auckland and Otekauke respectively.

Miss Betty Spiers, who on Thursday underwent an operation for appendicitis at the Amara Private Hospital, is now making steady progress towards recovery. The friends of Miss Mary Lenihan, the daughter of Mr and Mrs M. J. Lenihan, of Heatherlea, will be sorry to. learn that she is at present an inmate of the IPalmerston North Hospital. Euchre at Kimberley. The usual fortnightly social evening conducted by the Kimberlcy Hall Committee took place on Thursday evening a euchre tournament providing the principal attraction. Prize-winners were: —Ladies: First, Mrs. G. Dome; sealed, Mrs. Denton; consolation, Mrs. J. Oak. Gents: First, Mr. White; sealed, Mr. G. Dome; consolation, Mr. W. Hughes. A very nice supper was served by the ladies of the committee before the gathering broke up. Bridge Evening. On Monday evening last the ladies '.of the Levin Croquet Club held a very successful (bridge party in the Oxford 'Tea Rooms, there being about twelve talbles of players. Warm fires and delightful flowers helped to considerably enhance the proceedings. The prize winners were Mrs M. 0 Mrs Leach, Mr €. Inder and Mr W. Ryder. . Trophies are to be given at the end of the series of evenings for the lady and gentleman with the highest score. A delicious supper was servod by those in charge, and the next of these popular functions is pleasurably anticipated. The President of the Croquet Club Mrs AV. Bull, in a brief speech .thanked everyone for attending, especially in such unfavourable weather. Those present included Mesdames W. Bull, C. Amos, Brewster, Easton, Burrell, W. M. Clarke, Black, Melß-ae, Cameron, D. S. Mackenzie, TI. George M. O'Connor, Clarke, J. Gallagher, W. Smaill, S. Hall, W, Ryder, Mudgway, Walker, A. Dempsey, C. Inder, Leach, Misses M. Cameron, Clarke, D. Dempsey, Ryder, Bertram, M. Bcvan, Baker and many others. Duchess Leads. Sir Hubert is recruiting for the Wyatt Earp expedition next winter and will further discusa his polar submarine for which he will undertake the trial trip in 1936. The actual voyage, with Lady Wilkins as «ook, will take place in 1037. The submarine, would travel lfi hours under water out of the 24. It would start from Stpitzbergen or Behring Straits and attempt to arrive at America via the Pole.
