The improved prices offering for flax during the last few months have caused a revival of interest in the industry in the Waikato. The South Auckland Flaxgrowers' Coy., Ltd., has begun cutting flax on ait area ! of 1776 acres it owns at Orini and on a block of 1000 acres over which it has cutting rights on Piako Road, Gordonton.

Charges of giving false fire alarms and also false telephone calls were preferred against a 15-year-old youth who appeared before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., •in the Children's Court at Palmerston North yesterday. He was placed under the supervision of the child welfare officer for two years, the Magistrate giving a warning that very serious action would be taken in such cases in future.

"During the last .year attendances at the race meetings have increased and racing generally has made a considerable upward tendency from the sad state of affairs that has existed," the president of the New Zealand Racing Conference remarked in addressing delegates at the annual meeting in Wellington yesterday. It is becoming' evident that the first mail for Apia leaving Wellington on July Kith will bo of unusually heavy proportions owing to the interest taken by New Zealanders in the first issue of the Western Sainoan Pictorial stamps on August 7th. The first-day cover envelopes are going forward for post-dating at Apia on August 7th, and the New Zealand Post Office is sending an experienced officer to the Territory to supervise the process of affixing stamps and postmarking them in tlfe careful way which pleases collectors. The final mail from New Zealand to reach Samoa in time for the first issue leaves Auckland on buly 27th, due Apia August Ist, and the first outward mail from Apia following the sale of the new issue will reach New Zealand on September 2nd.

The inaugural meeting of the Levin Branch of the British Israel World Federation will be held iii the Century Hall en Wednesday evening, when the leaders of the movement in the Dominion w r ill be present and explain its objects. The meeting will be open to anyone who is interested.*

Brethren of the Masonic Lodge will assemble at the Temple in Stanley Street, at I.l'u p.m. to-morrow, Sunday, to attend the - funeral of the late Bro. YV. G. Vickers. In this issue dancers are advised that on Tuesday, August 13th, the Ohau Tennis Club will be conducting a grand dance in the Ohau Hall, and are advised to keep this date free. The second church parade of the Levin troop of Boy Scouts will take place at the morning service at St. Andrews' Presbyterian church tomorrow. The troop will parade at the comer of Oxford and Kent Streets, thence marching to the church. Interviewed on Thursday in Wellington, the acting-Prime Minister (Sir Alfred Ransom) said it would be impolitic to disclose any' details of the prospective meat agreement. As soon as a definite settlement had been made a statement would be issued to the publice of New Zealand. It is understood that the Government, as well as the other members of yesterday's conference, expressed determination to support Mr. Coates in whatever action he denied it necessary to take. There appears to be a confident anticipation that an agreement will be concluded within a few days.
