Italian Troops Still Going to Africa
MUSSOLINI IN BELLICOSE MOOD. CHAMBER CHEERS HIS SPEECH, Received Sunday, 9.50 p..m. ROME, May 25. Italian troops are continuing to go to Africa despite the Geneva agreement. It is stated that the mobilisation is entirely defensive and will continue as long as the Government considers necessary.
Arbitration must be limited to the usual incident, said Signor Mussolini in the Chamber amid the cheers of the Deputies. He added: "Nobody must cherish the hope that they can alter the Abyssinian situation by levelling a pistol and firing it at us in the event of European complications. We have been watching the situation since 1925. We know that European nations have been furnishing arms to Abyssinia since 1930. Ualual was the alarm bell, indicating a menacing situation. Those who falsely criticise Italy's precautionary measures are foolish if they think such manoeuvres will stop or delay the measures we consider necessary. We are ready to face firmly all responsibilities, even the greatest. "To those who wish to concentrate Italy's attention on the defence of the Brenner frontier against Germany in order to interfere with our mobility, we say Austria's independence is both an Austrian and a European problem, but particularly an Italian. Italy's frontiers, whether colonies or otherwise, must be defended against every menace."
