"FLYING SCOTSMAN" AVERAGES 75 MILES-PER HOUR.

The "Flying Scotsman" lias established a British railway record by travelling from King's Cross to Leeds, 18C miles, in 2 hours 31 minutes, at an average speed of 75 miles, and a maximum speed of 94£ miles hourly. During the return journey the train attained 97£ miles hourly. Britain's greatest passenger train average speed was lower.
The trip was undertaken to test a steam train against the Diesel engined "Hamburg Flyer," which did a trip of 178 miles to Berlin in 2 hours IS minutes.
