LABOUR’S CHOICE FOR RANGITIKEI.

LATE SIR JAMES WILSON’S GRANDSON. A POLITICAL SENSATION. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) MARTON, Last Night. Something in the nature of a political sensation has developed in the Rangitikei electorate with the announcement that Mr Ormond Wilson, son of Mr Hamish Wilson, of Bulls, and grandson of the late Sir James Wilson, one of the leaders of the old Conservative Partyin New Zealand, has been selected as the official Labour candidate for the Rangitikei seat at next General Election. Mr Ormond Wilson, who is a farmer by occupation, has not long returned from Oxford University, where he came under the influence of the modern movement in the famous old English centre of learning. It is perhaps not altogether surprising to hear of such changes these days, when it is remembered that the leader of the British Conservative Party, Mr Stanley Baldwin, finds himself opposed on the other side of the House of Commons by his son Oliver, who is one of the rising hopes of the Labour Party.

The situation in Rangitikei will ceftainly he most intriguing. The present member, Mr A. Stewart, was only returned at last ejection hy a small majority from Mr J. T. Hogan, ex-M.'P. for Wanganui. There is a strong Labour element in the constituency, which includes Wanganui East at one end and Taihape at the other extreme. With an ardent young farmer proclaiming the doctrines of Labour, it is quite on the cards that he may secure considerable support in the rural areas. TO OPPOSE MR FORBES. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Dr. Frank Birkinshaw, of Amberley, is almost certain to be the Labour candidate to oppose the Prime Minister for the' Hurunui seat. Dr. Birkinshaw has been approached and has consented to stand, but has yet to be formally approved by the Labour Party. Approval is stated to be practically certain, however.
