WANGANUI GALLOPS SATURDAY'S WORK The weather was ideal and the tracks in excellent. order for work at Wanganui last Saturday. The No. 1 grass track, on which the fast work was done, was a second or two faster than it has been hitherto, though as yet not by any means as fast as was the ease fast year at this stage of the season.

King’s Knave, who appears to-have benefited by hia race at Martoh, got through serviceable work before the breakfast interval, as also did His stablemate,. the two-year-old Lady Ruler. The? latter gained some experience at Marton, where- she contested the Juvenile Plate, and further education will be provided in the parade on the opening day of the Wanganui meeting.

Though not required to .make time, Burnish and Canopy both pleased by the manner in which they struck out when worked together over five furlongs. /These three-year-old fillies pro mise to be useful members of Earner's team as the season progresses, and if Burnish fulfils her two-year-old promise she should play a prominent part in the Wanganui Guineas next Saturday. Spiral wag associated with Rust in a nice galfop over six furlongs, the pair not being extended at any stage, though it was strong pace work. Both are down for opening-day engagements at the Wanganui meeting, and as they have had previous successes here they will be well supported. Following the breakfast interval some interesting work was seen, the operations being followed with interest by a gallery of watchers.

Two Maiden Race candidates in Sunce and Araante. together' with

Queanbeyan, were seen stretched put

over five furlongs, a distance they covered in 1. 4 2-5. Amante (Chief Ruler —Adorable) had the advantage at the start, commencing more smartly than her companions, but she was overtaken by Sunee before they had gone two furlongs, and the Trentham candidate eventually finished a length clear of Amante, with Queanbeyan a little more than that distance further back. It was a smooth performance on the part of Sunee, while Amante showed a good deal of early pace.

Hest finished dear of Le Sable at the end of five furlongs, a distance they covered in 1.5 4-5, with Hest travelling nicely at the finish. Le Sable had assumed the role of pacemaker in the early stages, but in the xun across the top Hest forged ahead and held the advantage on the home stretch in spite of being well otit from the rails. A smart sort of youngster is Shu, full-brother to Hest, for he showed a lot of pace over the initial stages of a four-furlong journey in company with the Maiden Race candidate, Dawn Princess. Though the filly missed the jump-out somewhat the first quarter was cut out in the smart time of 24 l-ssec, and thereafter Dawn Princess came along to hold a narrow advantage at the finish, with the watch registering 50 3-ssec. Considering that Dawn Princess is just recovering from a cold, she did well. Looking very well after her outings at the combined hunt clubs' meeting at New Plymouth, Korokio bowled along over five furlongs to' record 1.4 3-5, which must be considered very satisfactory in view of the fact that she worked alone.

After being schooled over two flights of battens, shaping a litti'e better than in his earlier essays, Red Sun was sent seven furlongs at a fast clip, and did very well to record 1.33 3-5 for the journey, thus demonstrating that he has plenty of pace on the flat providing he can be induced to fence more cleanly. A better display of jumping was given by No Humbug, who was sent at her fences by M. Moran and cleared them in her, stride, negotiating five in the circuit.

Alcides Scratched Owing to developing a cold, Alcides was left in the paddock on Saturday morning, and he was withdrawn from the Putiki Hack Handicap field at 9.40 a.ra. s

Owing to an oversight Dawn Princess, for whom an acceptance was paid on Friday, was omitted from the list .of acceptors for that race issued on Friday night. This makes the number [engaged in the Maiden Race 16, tour of them locally trained.

AT NEW PLYMOUTH Several interesting trials on the part of New Plymouth horses engaged at the Wanganui meeting were provided on Saturday morning, the plough being used. The first to move were Headmistress (Davoren) and Superior (Pine), who jumped away from a muddling start at the mile peg. Superior carried the mare along- in the early stages to run the first half-mile in 52 2-ssec, and the first six furlongs in 1.18 2-5, but Headmistress wars doing better in the final stages to complete the journey in 1.46. Without being a brilliant effort, the gallop can be considered satisfactory, though it will not gain friends for Superior in the Guineas.
