HOROWHENUA COUNTY.

ENGINEER’S REPORT. At the monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday last, the Engineer (Mr J. T. M. Brewv ster) submitted the, following report 1 for the month of August:— Tokomaru Riding.—Quite an amount of minor damage has been attended to by way of moving small slips and clearing water channels, more especially on the hill roads. Otherwise general maintenance has .been attended to. The stone crusher will soon be crushing metal from the Tokomaru river for repairs to district roads. The road at tram crossing on Makerua-Eangitano road has been improved. The metal has been raked in over the whole of this road. The girders of No. 1 bridge on Old Foxton road have been cleaned and oil painted. Wirokino Riding.—Maintenance metal has been put on various district roads from the crusher at Tararua pit. I expect to finish crushing for the time being some time next week. Maintenance metal from Ohau river is being, put on Ohau West and adjacent roads. I have made an inspection of the waterrace trouble referred to at the Levin sale yards. The race runs diagonally through the holding paddock and the slope of the ground is towards the race. A way to overcome the trouble would be to deviate the race at the south-east corner of the holding paddock on to the public road and take it round the corner to the'" intake of the culvert. This would mean the constructing of 280 feet of race on the road. If this work was undertaken it would be necessary to erect about 40 feet of fence on the road side of the race at the corner to prevent travelling stock from damaging the race. Otaki Riding.—General maintenance has been carried out on district roads. I hope to get metal on to Waikawa Beach road at an early date. A heavy rain and subsequent good caused a small amount of damage on Waitolm. Valley road. Repairs are well in hand.; Signs prohibiting camping, and lighting fires have been erected on Convent road. Te Horn Riding. —Small slips have been cleared on Rahui, Otaki Gorge and Mangaone roads. Lupins have been pulled and cut back from road sides in Waimea township.
