Nunneley Casket Tennis at Wellington
CITY TEAM LEADING BY FOUR MATCHES TO TWO WELLINGTON, Last Night. At the end of the first day’s play at Miramar ’ to-day in the Nunneley Casket competition between teams of women tennis players representing Wellington and the combined Wanga-nui-Taranaki-Manawatu districts, Wellington led by four games to two. The combined team won two singles of the four singles and two doubles played. A strong and gusty northerly wind was blowing diagonally across the court and made any sustained exhibition of good tennis quite impossible. Detailed results are as follow, Wellington players being mentioned first:.
Miss D. Nicholls beat Miss M. Purcell, 6—o, 6—l. Miss D. Howe beat Miss M. Rutherford,‘6 —3, 6—2. Miss M. Whisker lost to Miss I. Small, 6—3, .4—6, 4—6. Miss M. Whyte lost to Mrs R. P. Adams, I—6, I—6. Misses Nicholls and Howe beat Misses Purcell and Rutherford, 6 —l. ,6—o.
Misses Whyte and Whisker beat Mtf Adams and Miss Small, 6—3, o—6,0 —6, 6—4.
