THE FELIX DANCE.

A NIGHT OF PLEASING VARIETY. The Felix Old-time and Modern Assembly is .proving very popular in Levin, judging by the large crowd that was present at the dance held in the Druids ’ Hall last Wednesday night, there being over seventy couples in attendance, including visitors from '‘Wellingjtont, Johnsonvillc, Palmerston North, Te Horo, Shannon, and outlying districts. The Druids’ Hall has been re-decorated, with a very artistic result and the coloured lighting and stage effect reflect great credit on the •decorating committee.

Amongst the numerous dresses worn were those which follow: —Miss Hazel Martin, black panne velvet; Mrs Rathbone, flame georgette; Mrs Borrfll (Wellington), white silk lace; Mrs D. Worsfold, black velvet; Mrs Robertson, black velvet; Mrs D. Ctreer, maroon satin; Mrs Mungavin, maroon satin; Miss Staples, pink satin and net; Mrs Staples, peacock blue satin; Miss Hcsp, wine satin;. Miss Morgan, saxe velvet; Mrs G. Mudgway, lemon silk; Misses Nola and Nida Greer, sea green and wine georgette; Miss F. Hannah, floral satin.

The evening was spent with numerous old-time.and modern novelty dances, and, with" the addition of several of the less known old-time dances, which wore first demonstrated by the “Wellington party, it covered one of the finest variety dance programmes that have been held in Levin; and it was not long before everyone was joining in.

An added attraction was Miss Hazel Martin’s first appearance in Levin; and her exhibition dances of tap and toe tap brought tremendous applause from the gathering. Her performance, was of such a. character as to indicate that she has few equals hi,New Zealand in fancy dancing. Those who were so fortunate as 1 to be present and witness this exhibition can fully appreciate the fact that she is the holder of the “Champion of Champions” Belt of New Zealand; and it is hoped that at a future date Miss Martin will favour Levin with a further display of .her wonderful talent. The waltzing competition drew very large entries, over thirty couples taking part in it. The judges, Mr Jack Eowe and Mr Frank Rathbouc (Wellington), had a difficult task set them to select the winners, there being great c®mpetition amongst the waltzers. After several elimination contests, the judges picked out Mr Eric Reid and Mrs Don Greer as winners, and placed Mr C. Higgs and Miss Nola Greer sec-

oiid, the decisions meeting with the approval of everyone present. The exhibition waltzing of Mr F. Eathbone and Mrs BorrelLwas a wonderful demonstration, and they must be amongst the finest waltzers that Uiave ever been seen in Levin. The Monte Carlo waltz was a huge success and the “joker” had a great run. After intense competition, Miss Lankow and partner proved to 'be the lucky pair. The dance music was in the capable hands of the Felix Boys—Ted Pratt and Phil McKay—and their exhilarating strains drew applause from one and all. The players had to respond to numerous encores. Much appreciated extras were played by Mrs Mungavin and Mr Williams. Mr Jack Rowe was the official M.C. and again proved himself very popular, and thanks are due to him for keeping everything going with a happy swing. A very dainty supper was put on by the ladies of the Wellington party, and proved one of the most popular items of the evening. The dance was carried on to the early hours of the morning, and when the last number was announced many wished that the function was just beginning instead of ending.

Iffie next Felix dance will be held in the Druids’ Hall on August 16th, when there will b e a series of heats for a waltzing competition, starting on that night and taking three nights for the final. This will be the Horowhenua waltzing championship and the contest will be conducted .under proper championship rules. Further particulars will be advertised later.
