DERATING OF FARM LANDS.

FARMERS’ UNION AFFIRMS PRINCIPLE. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 14. , The principle of the total derating of agricultural and pastoral lands for roading purposes was rc-aliirmed by the Farmers’ Union Conference to-day. There was a division of opinion, however, some delegates holding the opinion that the Union should press for partial derating, but an amendment to this effect was lost. The remit carried was the Auckland one reading:— “This conference considers that the present system of finance for roading purposes under the present traffic conditions is absolutely wrong in principle and practice and demands the total derating of agricultural and pastoral land for roading purposes. It reaffirms, the principle that the users should pay It protests strongly against petrol taxation. being devoted to any purpose other than road construction and maintenance and calls upon all farmers to do their utmost to obtain this objective.”
