SUSPICIONS CONCERNING PRISON CAMPS Received Thursday, 9.50 p.m. LONDON, July 13. Dr. Spiegel, a Jewish lawyer, was recently marched by the Nazis barefoot through the streets of Munich with a placard suspended from his neck; “I will never again complain to the police about the Nazis.” Ho was then murdered ‘'while attempting to escape” from the concentration camp at Dachau. The Daily Herald says the Nazis admit his death, but the formula “while attempting to escape” is now regularly used to account for the deaths of victims in concentration camps. Moreover, the Dachau camp is surrounded by eloctriiied barbed wire, rendering escape impossible. The Times’ Berlin correspondent says curiosity regarding the number of prisoners in concentration camps is only partially appeased by the official announcement that there arc 18,000, including 12,000 in Prussia. An average estimate based on figurgs of the daily arrests since the Reichstag lire would have been nearer 100,000. The Nazi Minister of the Interior for Saxony, Herr Fritseh, recently boasted that there were twice as many prisoners in Saxony’s camps as Prussia’s. The Nazi social revolution throughout Germany is taking strange forms. Thus the so-called “cleansing” of the film industry requires all fibn directors, cameramen and other experts, to prove their German nationality' and Aryan origin by producing documents proving their grandparents and religion. Curiously enough simultaneously in Vienna the Oesterrrcichcs Abendblatt published full details of the entries of birth, about 1820, and photos of tombstones, proving that Hitler himself is descended from a Jewish family from Polna, Czechoslovakia. The Prussian Minister of the Interior has now prohibited the circulation of 291 foreign newspapers, including five British, 33 French, 48 Austrian, 11 Russian and 12 United States. The sale in Germany of foreign newspapers in the German language printed abroad has increased enormously during recent months, while the. circulation of local papers has fallen heavily.
