OLD-TIME AND MODERN ASSEMBLY.

A NIGHT OP PLEASING VARIETY. A very successful dance was held in the Druids ’ Hall last night, when the Old-time and Modern Assembly from Wellington held the first of their series. A feature of the evening was the introduction of some of the real oldtime dances. When these were demonstrated it was not long before all the dancers were swinging around in these once popular measures, which some of the “old-timers” had forgotten and the young dancers had never seen. The dances that were demonstrated were the “Destiny” waltz, the maxina, Eva three-step, and several of the lesser known old-time dances. An exhibition old-time waltz was given by two of the members of the Wellington party, and was very much appreciated. A competitive dance, the Monte Carlo waltz, was won by Mr H. Kiugsbeer and Miss Edna White.

The music for the dances was in the capable hands of the Felix Boys —Ted Pratt and Phil McKay—and they had to respond to numerous encores to their snappy items. The official M.C. for the evening was Mr Jack Rowe, who was a host in himself, keeping everything going with a swing and making himself very popular with everyone. A very dainty supper was served by ■the ladies of the party.

Dancing was kept up until the early hours of • the morning, the gathering concluding after'a very happy evening had been spent by everyone. Thfc next dance of their series will be held on Wednesday, July 26th, when the Assembly will introduce several new dances, and there will also be a waltzing competition, which will be judged by Mr Jack Eowe, holder of the New Zealand and Australian waltzing championships. At this dance the price of admission will be 1/6, and an extra girl will be admitted free with each couple. Further details will be advertised later.
