RUGBY FOOTBALL.

RAHUI v. KUKU. This game, flayed at Otaki, created a deal of interest, and after a hardfought contest resulted in favour of Eahui, 9 —3. Play was not of a scientific nature, but, at times, passing was brisk. Scrum work was hard, but patchy. Teams were: Eahui. —Stevens, Childs, Thomson, Bishop, Webster, Freeman, Fleet, Coulter, Kendrick, McArdle, Kirby, Berryman, Drummond, Moore, McEwen. Kuku. —Seymour (2), Wchipeihana (2), Be van, Atkins, Paipa, Poutama, Puipa, Adams, Periwiti, Gilroy, Burton.

Eahui immediately Decame aggros- 1 sive, but were penalised and a free kick sent them back to half-way. They, however, made another onslaught, and Fleet sent to Freeman, but the latter was collared before passing. By a series of loose rushes, aided by. free kicks, Kuku went on attack aim Peter Wehipeihana was enabled to have a shot at goal. The kick failed. Bishop and Webster then took part in smart passing, and while on attack Moore had an unsuccessful shot at goal. Coulter then got under way, and by solid play, backed up by Thomson and Bishop, Kuku were again on defence. Some clean passing saw Eahui backs under way, and Bishop made no mistake when he received the ball. By a determined run he crossed the line, well out. Moore failed to add the major points. Kuku went to the attack and gave Eahui a few anxious minutes till the backs again relieved. Back to attack and Freeman missed a likely chance by hanging to the ball, and as the result of the free kick Kuku became aggressive till Childs made a good run. , Passing by both sides pleased, but Eahui gained the advantage, and Fleet, Thomson, and Webster put in nice play. Kuku accepted a force. Stevens, who played reliably throughout, had a pot-shot from wellout, but the ball dropped short. Then Kuku forwards by a solid rush overwhelmed Eahui and attacked. Wehipeihana had another unsuccessful shot at goal. Hard play followed, and Childs received an injury which caused him to leave the field. Tullock filled the vacancy and before the spell ended crossed the line in good style to score. Kuti failed to convert, 6 —o.

Good play was witnessed in the second half and for a time Kuku attacked. Bowling crossed the line but failed to ground the ball, and from the scrum that followed Rahui became aggressive and good passing saw them well on attack. However, they made repeated infringements, enabling Kuku to attack. Perewiti made a fine run to score, but Potama failed at goal, 6—3. Play became exciting and spectators, barracking freely, urged the players on. ißahui were at this stage passing nicely, but nippy play by Lewis saw this player out-stripping others. He reached Stevens, who upended him in good style. This same player saved again a few minutes later, then came smart play by Coulter. Freeman made a determined attempt to score and just failed, after which Rahui backs, by faulty handling, lost opportunities. Finally Berryman forced his way over and scored. Kuti failed at goal, 9 —3. Stevens, at full, was quite good, and he saved on many occasions, while Thomson (centre) had a lot of hard work to contend with. He emerged with honours. Childs proved fast, while Bishop played in a determined manner, making the most of chances. Freeman, at times, was good but lost chances by holding the ball. He plays hard and should develop into - a good player. Webster and Fleet both played well, and set their backs in motion on many occasions. Their passing was good. The opposition pack gave them but few opportunities. Coulter proved a fast-worker, while other forwards shirked nothing. With better combination they will have a solid pack. Wehipeihana, Burton, Poutama, and Paipa played well for the visitors. The backs, when under way, proved smart, while the forwards were a hard-work-ing lot. Mr. Hemi controlled the game in a satisfactory manner.
