“FATHER” OF DAYLIGHT. SAVING. DUNEDIN, May 20". ■ Obituary : Sir Thomas Sidey. The late Sir Thomas Sidey had a lengthy career of public service, which was fittingly recognised by His Majesty the Ring in 1930 when he‘conferred on him the title of K.B.E. Born in Dunedin in May, 1803, the son of Mr. John Sidey, a pioneer Otago settler, he wan educated at the Otago Boys’ High school and the University of Otago-whez-e he qualified B.A. in 1885 ana LL.B. two years later. He was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in 1889' and began a period of valuable on behalf of bodies in the (Otago Province well as the Presbyterian. Church, this training fitting him for an. outstanding Parliamentary career. He was a Sunday' school teacher for 45 years and as well took a considerable interest in horticultural matters, being: president of the Dunedin branch of the* New Zealand' Horticultural Institute since its foundation. His activities in the cause of education, too, were wellknown and in addition to being chairman of the Otago High School Board of Governors he was Chancellor of'Otago* University; he had been a member of the Senate of the, University of New Zealand since 1925.

The late Sir Thomas 7 s Parliamentarycareer began in N l9Ol when he was elected member, for Caversham, and he sat continuously for the same which later became South Dunedin, till 1928, when he retired. He was called, to the Legislative Council as Leader 1928-31; was Attorney-General in thesame period; and Minister of Justice in. 1929. Notable among his activities washis association with dental legislation,, prison reform, education proposals and daylight saving, the legislation promoted by him during 19 years in connection- with the latter finally being passed’ in 1927. He was one of the New Zealand representatives at the Imperial Conference in 1930.
