OTAKI NEWS.

OTIAKI, 'Friday. A light shock of earthquake was felt in Otaki and district at 1 p.m. yesterday. ' ■ Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan, who have been visiting Otaki, returned home today. Miss Smith, Otaki, is visiting Pahiatua and is the guest of Mrs. H. Paterson. Mr. J. K. Hornblow, Chairman of the Palmerston North Hospital Board, was among the visitors to Otaki to-day.

The Eev. Paul Tokoaitua, who has taken up residence at Otaki, was yesterday given a welcome by a number of Natives. Speeches appropriate to the occasion were made and replied to.

The death occurred at Wellington on Wednesday of Mr. James McGill, father to Miss McGill, and brother to Mr. J. McGill, of Otaki. The deceased, who was well-known and highly respected, was in his 67th year. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved relatives.

The Fire Brigade’s euchre tournament on Wednesday night was quite as enjoyable as others held at the station, and many games were>--keenly contested. Mrs. Bell won the first prize for the ladies, with Miss Wood second. Mr. Buick was the most successful gentleman with Mr. J. Johnson second. Supper was served and enjoyed. ~

RELIEF IN OTAKI. ART UNION REALISES £25. A meeting of tlie Relief Committee was held %t the Cosy theatre yesterday afternoon, Mr, D. Richards presiding. The chairman extended a welcome to Mr. J. Johnson, who had been appointed on the committee in place of Mr. R. Maddock, the latter having been appointed to a seat on the Unemployment Committee.

It was reported that as the resilit of euchre, dance, and competitions the sum of £lO Is had been raised, while there had also been a substantial profit from the shop day, organised by Mrs. Johnson and Mr. Blackmore. Letters were received from the Druids’ and Oddfellows’ Lodges, each donating £1 Is towards relief funds, while the Masonic Lodge stated that the application for a grant would be considered at its next ’ meeting.— Votes of thanks were accorded to the Lodges for their donations. It was reported that no reply 'as to a grant had been received from the Te Horo Women’s Institute.

Mr. C. B. Atmore wrote, stating that he had pleasure in handing in a cheque for £25 which the Hon. Minister of Internal Affairs had forwarded to him with instructions that it be applied to our relief funds for the relief of distress. He thought that application for relief should not be limited to applications drom unemployed men only, his view being, that all applications should be dealt with on their merits, whether from unemployed men or otherwise, and he understood that the Committee were in agreement with these views.— Ifiwas pointed out that the scheme as suggested had' already been applied. It was reported tljat £1 9s lOd had been collected at the football match at Otaki on Saturday for relief -purposes. It was stated that nothing definite had been done relative to a social hall but it was hoped that arrangements would shortly be made.

It was agreed that in future the Committee be known as the “Otaki Distress Relief Committee.’'’ A clothes * drive was suggested and unanimously supported, and due notice will be given of the date on which it will take place. It was hoped that all would respond liberally, it being stated that the last occasion of a drive. was a decided success. An offer by Mr. Richards to provide a suitable room was accepted with thanks. It was agreed that the “drive’ ’ take place early in June, and to intimate that all parcels would be gratefully received.

It was reported that there were 126 relief workers in Otaki and that some were in sore straits. —A Committee was set up to consider the- needs of the most deserving cases.

A vote of condolence to Mr. and Mrs. O ’Rourke and Mrs. Harper was passed in silence, all standing.
