No Trouble Brewing

MINERS’ SECRETARY DENIES ALLEGATION

GREYMOUTH, Last Night,

Mr. William Purdy, secretary of the West Coast . Miners’ Council, states that Mr. Holgate, the coal owners’ president, had no justification for saying that trouble was brewing in the industry here, nor has the council asked for a meeting in Wellington. The position is that the agreement expired some time ago and the miners have urged the council to secure the protection of an agreement, therefore as a conference had already been arranged for Westport to deal with the enginedrivers’ agreement, the Miners’ Council simply requested that a general agreement also be considered at that conference. The miners have no desire for spending money on a conference in Wellington but desire to be working under an agreement. Mr. Purdy is at a loss to know why the miners are criticised on that account.
