PHELPS RETAINS SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.
BEATS MAJOR GOODSELL BY A LENGTH IN LATE SPURT.
(By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright.) '(Received This Bay, 11.30 a.m.) LOS ANGELES, Sept. 5. At the Longbeach rowing stadium, E. A. Phelps (England) re(tained the world’s professional sculling championship, defeating Major Goodsell (Australia) by a length and taking 17min, 6.2 sec. for the 4000 metres course. Phelps came from behind in the last 200 metres, after being four lengths behind at the turn. It was the first time in /the history of the event that it was crowed around a turn.
The world’s sdulling championship has been won during the past twelve years as under: — 1920 E. Barry beat A. Felton, in Australia. 1921 D’Arcy Hadfield beat R. Arnst, in New Zealand. 1922 J. Paddon beat Hadfield in New Zealand. 1923 — (Paddon beat Hadfield, in tralia--1924 Paddon beat A. Felton, in Australia. 1924 'Paddon beat Major Goodsell. 1925 'Goodsell beat J. P. Hannan (N.Z.) 1925 Goodsell beat J. Paddon (N.Z.) 1926 — Goodsell beat Tom Saul, 1927 Goodsell beat H. A. Barry (Vancouver). 1928 — H. A. Barry beat Major Goodsell. May, 1930—Phelps beat Barry. October, 1930—Phelps beat Barry.
