The engagement is announced' of •Constance, youngest daughter of Mr A. J. Alloway, Levin, to Cyril Stewart, elder son of • Mrs J. S. Armislead, Hopelands, Woodville. ;

Mr G. Mprgan, of Levin, who was injured when he fell from his cycleduring the amateur road race on June 3rd, is now making satisfactory progress in the Palmerston. Hospital.

Mr Walter Newton, Secretary of the Labour Department since March, 1930, has retired on superannuation. The Department is now under the control of the Commissioner of Unemployment, Mr Godfrev.

There is no change in the condition of Mr C. W. White, secretary of the Manawhenua Rugby Union and other organisations in Palmerston North, who was taken seriously ill with pneumonia several days ago.

Mr H. Charmings, Levin Borough Overseer, returned yesterday from the, Palmerston North Hospital, after a week’s treatment. His illness was found to be of. (gastric origin, and the fear of complications has fortunately been dispelled, ibut it will be some time before Mr Charmings regains proper health.
