UNOCCUPIED BUILDING DESTROYED.

At about '3.45 on Tuesday morning a lad named William Everitt gave an alarm that a fire had broken out in an unoccupied building, owned by the Whiteman Estate and situate on the Riverbank, Road. An attempt was made to ring the siren but this was found to be out of action. However, a number of firemen had seen the glare while the ringing of telephones connected in case of night alarms were soon busy, and in quick time there was a good muster of brigade members. Three leads of hose were run to the fire, but despite the fine pressure, it burned fiercely, having a strong hold before the brigade arrived. There was but little wind at the tame but it was only a matter of a quarter of an hour when the building was well gutted. It was then that the brigade got cont.ro . The house, a nine-roomed one, had been unoccupied for about a moot , Mr. Lcarv vacating it in xMay. ine origin of the fire is a complete mystery. On account of the early hour and the fact that the siren would not sound there was not a large gathering of sight-seers. ....... The insurance on the building was £1325 in the Standard Office.
