BOARD’S CONTROL OF SERVICES,

SOME LICENSES REFUSED,

The Central Licensing Authority under the Transport Act of last session has been sitting in Wellington hearing applications for licenses foir the use of the roads from various transport companies. Stabilisation of fares and co-ordination of time-tables were objects generally provided for in conditions made to licenses granted yesterday when the Board considered applications from service car companies operating on various routes from Wellington and between provincial towns. Numerous applications were heard, and, for the most part, granted; a few- were dismissed, generally on grounds that the services did not meet any essential public interest.

When the board resumed its sitting yesterday (morning it gave decisions in a number of cases heard the previous day as follow: — Mr J. 11. Stevens’s application for his service between Wellington and Palmerston North, through the Wairarapa and returning through the ManaWatu was granted, subject to the following conditions: (1) adjustment of time-table to comply with legal speed limits; (2) terminus in Wellington as prescribed by the Wellington City Council; (3) on outward journey from Wellington no passengers to be set down south of Upper liutt and on inward journey no passengers to be picked up south of Porirua; (4) provision of schedule showing intermediate fares, to be changed on’ the basis, of a'full fare of 12/6 between Wellingtijn and Palmerston North; (5) schedule of goods charges to be provided; (6) one vehicle only to be used on any

trip. . • '■ The Highways Transport Company’s application for its service 'between Wellington and Palmerston North was granted, subject to: —(1) Adjustment of time-table to comply with legal speed limits; (2) terminus in 'Wellington as prescribed by Wellington . .City Council; 3) on outward journey from Wellington no passengers to be set down, and no inward journey no passengers to be picked up south of Ponrua; (4) schedule of intermediate fares, (based on a full Palmerston NorthWellington fare, of 12/6, to be provided; (6) schedule of goods charges to be provided.

The S.O.S. Motor Services were granted licenses for their services from Wellington to Wanganui, Wellington to Wanganui, via Marton, anrl Wellington to New Plymouth, various conditions being imposed. Licenses applied for by Hodson’s Pioneer Motors, for services between Wellington and Wanganui, and Wellington and New Plymouth, were dismissed. The applicant was advised that Ms application for a service between- Wanganui and New Plymouth should go before the board for that district. The S.O.S. Motor Services were granted a license for their WellingtonPalmerston North service, ■ via Foxton and Himatangi, subject to higher fares being charged between Foxton and Palmerston North than those charged by the motor omnibus service already operating between those towns. Provision was made for the issue of tickets.
