RATTLE RAGING IN SUBURBS. (Received This Bay, :L0;20 a.m.) SHANGHAI, Fob. 3. A desperate battle isr.raging between the Chinese and Japanese in -t£e Chapei and Hongkong areas, indicating no intention on either side • • to withdraw until satisfactory safeguards are forthcoming. Commencing at 11 o’clock this morning, the Japanese: opened an intensive naval bonjbaxdxhent on the Woostmg forts at the mouth -of the river leading to Shanghai. The Chinese replied, but reports state the forts have been silenced. The Japanese have row occupied . ■'them, while the Chinese defenders, - numbering approximately a thousand, are reported to be in full retreat towards Shanghai. Additional American and British reinforcements arrived to-day. The . American cruiser Houston was pass- , ing up the river during the bombardment of the forts.
