A TEACHER RESIGNS.
UNDER UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCES Unusual circumstances surrounded the resignation of a woman teacher without notice from her post in charge of a back country school in Taranaki. No action was taken when the matter was considered by the Taranaki Education Board on Thursday. “I have left the school,” said the teacher, in her letter, ”ss I find it quite impossible to live on the salary I have been receiving. .1 understood when I took over control that I should receive £l2O per annum, ill this year, although I have been, teaching eight children I have received only £75 per annum, and have had to pay £1 per week for my board, so than the remainder is barely sufficient for my travelling expenses. I am aware lhat I should have given notice of my resignation before it took effect, but the living conditions where I boarded were so impossible that I felt that I must get away for the Easter week-end, and if I did so. I would not have had enough money for my return journey. I will aay now that the place is most objectionable and not fit for any lady teacher. The men and boys drink and swear continually, and their example is followed by the children, who swear openly at anything and anybody, particularly their teacher. I know that I am incompetent to deal with children whose normal training has been entirely neglected, and whose whole outlook is distorted. I recommend that the school be under the control of a firm male teacher. I should like to apologise for the inconvenience I have caused you by leaving so suddenly.”
