Hard Times at Niue
WELLINGTON, Last Night
Advice has been received by Hon. - Ngata from the Resident Commissioner of Niue that the Island is suffering • from the effects of severe drought conditions which, ha s prevailed for some ■ months. Copra prices are at a very low level, the latest London quotation for Niue copra being the lowest for 35 years. '* Recent shipments of bananas have ■ been severely curtailed purely on account of hurricane conditions. The people are reduced at present t(K depending on banana shipments' for - cash to supplement their own ‘food supplies and are feeling the pinch of * the hard times to an extent not generally realised by the New Zealand . public.
