BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.

VARIOUS ACTIVITIES IN LEVIN,

A meeting of the committee of the Levin a.nd District Beautifying Society was heM in the Band Room last week, when there were present: Mr C. 11. Pyke (President), Mesdames RProuse, W. M. Clark and S. R. Stednian, Miss Kebbell, Messrs P L. Arcus, S. R. Stedman, E. M. Herrick, S. Fletcher, W. H. Allen, W. Smaill and P. W. Goldsmith. STREET PLANTING.

A discussion took place on the street planting programme. It was reported, with rpgard to the proposed planting with karaka and titoki trees in Cambridge Street that the holes had been prepared, and it was suggested that the planting be done about the middle of September. The Secretary stated that Messrs Arcus and Herrick had offered to fill any blanks in Cambridge and Queen Streets. Mr Herrick said he had been, offered some totar.a trees, which could be used where wanted. The offer of these gentlemen was accepted with thanks and the President and Secretary agreed to make an inspection with them as to where renewals were wanted. WAIOPEHU SCENIC RESERVE. The Secretary reported that a member of the committee not present at the meeting thought the Waiopehu reserve would be improved by the plantof a number of rimu trees. Mrs Prouse said the reserve was not rimu country and the young trees won H. all die in a dry season. She had made many attempts to grow rimus, but none had succeeded on stony ground. Mrs Clark said her experience had been similar. It was difficult to get rimus to grow, Mr Arcus did not think there was any reason why the proposal should not be tried and there was the possibility that in the Waiopehu Reserve a small percentage might be successful. The committee agreed that the rimu was one of the most beautiful of the native trees, and that there could be no objection to try out the proposed planting at a suitable opportunity.

LEVIN CEMETERY. It was suggested that there was space available for planting suitable shrubs alongside the centre pathway through the cemetery. In the past large and unsuitable trees had been planted, but most of these had now been removed and the place could be beautified by suitable planting. Members thought it was probably too late this season for any work in'* the direction indicated, but that if individual members of the Committee bore the matter in mine?, some valuable suggestions might be forthcoming for work next year.

RAISING FUNDS. A discussion followed on the best means of raising funds. Miss Kebbell considered it would not be difficult to get 160 members at 2s 6d per year. The President pointed out that the public would have to be canvassed. It was also pointed out that some kind of public function was often advantageous in bringing the Society’s worn before the public. Mr W, H. Allen suggested that next season, the railway reserve near the station should be planted with bulbs. Established in grass, a very pjeasing display could be ensured at little cost or trouble. The suggestion was looked upon as a good one.
