A Press Association message from Christchurch to-day records the death of Mr Moss Ballin aged 55, surgeon dentist, and well-known in New Zealand boxing and athletic circles. Deceased came from Auckland in 1919.

Palmerston North and district lost one of its oldest residents by the death of Mrs Mary Ann Thacker which occurred on Saturday. For 57 years she resided in Palmerston North, and tents and huts along the present line of Fitzroy Street, Terrace End, provided thb only available accommodation for the pioneers in the days when she first arrived there, and Palmerston North .was not in existence, or only so in name. An engineer by occupation, the late Mr Freeman became a sawmillor and bridge-builder, operating a plant which cut much of the totara and other native timber for the early houses at the centre. Unfortunately at the age of 35, he died, and his wife was left a widow with a family of nine to support. Following nursing as an occupation, she brought them all up successfully, despite the hardships and vicissitudes of the early days, and eight now survive. After the death of her first husband she married Mr Richard Thacker, but he predeceased her many ' years ago. Daughters and a son left to mourn the loss of the late Mrs 1 hacker are Mrs M. J, Montgomery (Auckland), Mrs A. Martin (Palmerston North), Mrs F. Howard (Christchurch), Mrs J. Nelson (Palmerston North), Mrs C. S. Pickering (Palmerston North), Mrs K. Krivan (Palmerston North), Mrs E. Collis (Levin), and Mr H. J. Freeman (Palmerston. North), There are, sixteen grand children and six great-grand children.
