Following the evacuation of the second zone the inhabitants of Weissenthurn were incensed to find the French flag flying on the memorial for Genera 1 Hpclie, the caretaker of which declined to haul down the Tricolour when the Burgomaster requested it, maintaining that the memorial steed on French soil. The Burgomaster withdrew to consult .a higher authority and meanwhile the villagers sawed down the mast.
