QUIRINAL AND VATICAN.

ITALIAN KINO VISITS POPE

Sigpalising the end of the feud that has existed since 1870 when his grandfather, King Victor Emmaneul, seized Rome as his capital, King Victor and the Queen this morning crossed the threshold of the Vatican and were welcomed by an imposing array ■of Papal guards and escorted to the throne' room, where both curtsied and kissed the Papal ring,.after which they sal 1 on either side and conversed with the Pope, who finally imparted the Apostolic blessing on the Royal Family. J

In the chaos which followed the Napoleonic Wars, Italy was divided into republics, kingdoms and Papal states. - The ffeorts of such great Italian patriots as Mazzini, Garibaldi and Cavour were directed towards bringing into being a free and united Italy. This period, from 1815 to 1870 is often called the Eisorgimento, or the “Re-awak-■ening.” Victor Emmanuel of Piedmont became the leader round whom hopes ■centred. After war between France -and Piedmont against Austria in 1859, ‘ the new kingdom of Italy was really founded in the northern states. In 1870 Italy went to war with the Papal States which lay around Rome .and in September Victor Emmanuel entered the city. Rome was united to Italy by popular vote and a law was passed ■defining the position of the Vatican under the new regime. The Pope retired to the Vatican, but relations gradually became more friendly until this year when the 60-ycar-old breach was repaired, Mussolini granting certain territories, known as Vatican City, to the Pope.
