WHO OWNS ANTARCTICA?
LAND DISCOVERED BY AN AMERICAN IN 1832 ''IMPUDENCE AND EFFRONTERY" Received Monday, 11.15 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 2. The Washington Post editorially declares that Byrd's Polar flight has strengthened the United States claim to the Antarctic. It says the British claims thereto are based on nothing but impudence and effrontery. It is pointed out that Lieutenant Wilkes'of the United States Navy, discovered the Antarctic in December, 1532, whereas the Britisher, Captain Rosa, did not .see land prior to 1840. The newspaper contends that Byrd "s expedition is more practical. "He ha.< discovered new lands and claimed them and occupied them for the Uniteo States."
