HIGHER WAGES TO TAKE PREFERENCE OVER LOWER CHARGES.

The high standard attained in New Zealand in connection with the telephone system was mentioned at the ceremony to celebrate the cut-over from the manual to the automatic system) on Saturday night.
A plea was made for reduced rates, but the Postmaster-General announced that, before a reduction in rates came, he hoped to be able to give increases in salary to the staff, "Our telephone and postal services are conducted at lower rates than in almost any country in the world," he said.
