SAILORS’ JOY RIDE.
■FINE or £5 INFLICTED. (By Telegraph —Press 'Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Arising from a sailors ’ motor escapade on Friday night, Wilfred Jones, of the 11.M.5. Diomede, was to-day charged with unlawfully converting to his own use a car valued at £l5O, the property of Thomas Ernest Burn, and with having no driver’s license. It wag stated that Jones took the car and .iator picked up two other members jbf the Diomede crewo and three girls. After dancing for a while they proceeded to Brooklyn in the car and met with an accident. Counsel told the Bench that the Court proceedings would not be the last of the matter as accused could still be further dealt with by the authorities on the ship. The naval authorities had assured counsel they would see that the damage was paid by instalments. It was estimated at £l4O. Mr McNeil, S.M., said that of course that would be a matter for a civil claim. Counsel (Mr Leicester) said it would not go to the length of a civil claim.*; Whatever was fair and reasonable accused would pay. Of course with a car valued at £l5O they could not -.accept £l4O as damage without going further into the matter. A fine of £5 wag imposed.
