RACING ON ANNIVERSARY DAY.

Big Fields at Trentham.

Ashhurst Prospects.

(By “Silken Rein.”)

Interest in the racing world on Anniversary Day will be mainly centred on the Wellington Racing Club's midsummer meeting, which will open at Trentham tomorrow and continue on Thursday and Saturday. Those who attended the Foxton meeting will be thoroughly conversant with the form in the fields at the Ashhurst meeting, which will also be held to-morrow:

Both of the holiday fixtures are within easy reach of this district and local sportsmen will be well represented at each gathering. The Wellington Racing Club meeting -has drawn exceptionally large fields .and with its congestion of form it is not going to be an easy day for punters to-morrow. The principal events set down for decision are the Wellington Stakes for ,2 and 3 years olds, the Wellington Cup and the Telegraph Handicap. Following is the programme:— TRENTHAM HIGH-WEIGHT ’ .HANDICAP, of 200 sov.s.; 1 mile. Beaumont 10 .10 Zeuxis 0 5 Thurnbell 10 4 Toawai 9 <j R. Lineage 10 3 ‘Singer 9 :j Pale Star 10 1 Diana ’» Lad 9 3 Bonhomme 10 0 Star Raid 9 2 Arrowy 911 General Wai 9‘ rt Mist.-Gamp 9 9 Tcremoami 9 0 Airtight 9 7 Mandarine 9 (J Bright Day 9 7 -Famine 9 (! Decoy Bird 9 5 Bright Land 9 0

The form of Beaumont at Foxton will not increase the number of his admirers for to-morrow, but he must not be disregarded for one failure. Thurnbell’s performances at Awapuui suggests he will be ready soon. At that meeting, -he was beaten by Bonhomme by two lengths with a* difference of 10 lbs. With bibs better off they will be closer at the finish. Royal Lineage is good class, while Pale Star is likely after his Hawkes Bay outing. Arrowy ran second behind Lucy Locket ,followed by a second behind Gold Brick at Oamaru and then went to Dunedin at Christmas .where he won a mile event from Tombroney and Tardy. That form looks fairly good. Mister Gamp is now ready and Bright Day's second at Foxton suggests a win shortly. Singer can go a good six furlongs,, and may find the extra two furlongs just beyond him. Airtight will bo worth watching from now on and hjs two seconds at Stratford may be forgotten. When the machine closes there will be a descent price for: Mister G-amp Arrowy Airtight. WELLINGTON" STAKES, u furlongs. Ad. Drake Gay Ballerina Aspiring Goblin Market Ceremony Honour Childsplay My Own Clever Royal Queen First Money Speed Light Francoiin Winloch

While perhaps this may not he the most important event of the flay, it will certainly, bo the interesting one’. The absence of Supremacy is a little disappointing, but it is not going to be an easy race for Honour to win. Admiral Drake won at a good price, when he first appeared at Trentham, but has not done so very well since. Aspiring was considered a top-notcher by his Southern admirers, but he has not yet proved it. , Ceremony is consistent and must be given every chance to-morrow, while the. disappointing Childaplay is now on the up grade. Clever is not perhaps quite up to class, but was a good winner at Woodville and Awapuni. Dalston is a possibility on Auckland running, but one that appears more is Gay Ballerina. She is the makings of a good one and is om that is likely to bring about Honour’s defeat. Francolin has not won many 2-year-old events, but he is always in the money and Ids nine lengths win at Dunedin is worth consideration; The trio most likely to be in the finish are Honour Gay Ballerina Francolin.

APPRENTICES’ PLATE, 7 furlongs. Clarodon > Phillippic Filosol Pound Note Full Mark ' Roi de Val Gold Dawn Royal Black • Grand Acre . Stanchion High Court Star God High Faintin' Swoopalong Landguard Sylvan Dell Llunore Topcre Moorgas Wine Tray Paquito The fact that Grand Aero has won twice in his two starts, he will claim the attention of some speculators in the Apprentices Plate to-morrow. Filosel was a winner at Southland and this field will test him as to quality. Stanchion’s form, at Tauheranikau may be worth something, but Star God reads better on the face of his Hawkes Bay performances. Both .Full Mark and Rio de Val were winners at Manawatu and an improver in Royal Black should come to the front soon. .The distance will test Gold Daw,n i>ut Topcre should see it out. Moorgas has it in him, but whether he is lit for it, only tomorrow can tell. There will be plenty to speculate over in this event, bur on recent performances, it looks liI;•* the issue being fought out by Grand Acre Star God Topere. FITZHERBERT HANDICAP, of 350 sovs. For two-year-olds. Five furlongs. First Division. Ryl. Flyer 8 6 Air Laddm 7 7 Courtlike 7 13 Best Friend 7 ti Valpre 7 10 dazz Girl 7 •} Night Lad 7 10 Don Quixote 7 3 Push 7 0 Joleux 7 3 Bolcairo 7 S Solmar 7 0 My Own 7 8 Hot Spring 7 0 Uilstar - 7 7 Huntg. Cry 7 0 enoral Acreline 7 0 Assembly 7 7 Grand Blow 7

With 38 runners accepted for the Fitzherbert Handicap it has been decided to run the race in two divisions. Jazz Girl and Solmar is the only bracket in the first division. Thu form pair are * Royal Flyer Courtlike. Second Division. Cuticle 8 5 Ryl. Parade 7 3 Tobaccoland 7 12 Gay Virginia 7 0 Royal Line 710 Sapient 7 0 Tea Queen 7 9 Painting 7 0 Zarone 7 8 Marcel Semper Wave 7 (} Paratus 7 7 Emotion 7 0 Equitant 7 0 Lady Reno 7 0 Glonartney 7 0 Bon Hnr 7 0 Dies. China 7 4 Winloch 7 0 Ex Dono 7 3 Dresden China and Tea Queen will run as a bracket in the second division. Equitant. is a likely sort on early season form, but speculators will prefer Cuticle Tobacco Land, WELLINGTON CUP, of 1500 sovs.; 14 miles. Rapine 9 5 Concentrate 7 5 OratVix 8 3 Talisker 7 5 Vcrtigern 8 3 Beau Geste 7 3 Hoylakc 8 1 W. Fang 7 3 Set Sail 8 -1. Yoma 7 3 Pink Note 713 Ryl. Saxon 7 2 Star Area 71U Pupal u 7 0 Joy Bird 7 8 Blimp 7 U Btlc. Colours 7 8 Amor 7 0 The Hawk 7 8 Tori 7 0 Calkin 7 7 Rotor 7 0 Historic 7 0

The principal event has drawn a fairly strong field 'with Rapine heading the list. He won this event six years ago, but docs not appear to have come back on that form. Oratrix, by reason of her win in the New Zealand Cup, will have to be respected. Her best performance since that event appears to be her second to the deadheaters, Vertigeru and Concentrate, in the Grandstand Handicap at Auckland. Vertigeru has gone up 21b, Oratrix 21b, and Concentrate 11b, and if these are to be considered it looks like Concentrate winning, lloylake ran third in the Now Zealand Cup and on the following day won the Metropolitan of one and a-half miles. Since that performance, however, he has not appeared in the limelight. Set Sail has been running into fourths, but is improving yet does not appeal so well as Pink Note, who has been a consistent winner. The Manawatu Cup revealed a likely one in Star Area, but: he is among good class in this race. Joy Bird is now at the top of her form, and is in better fettle thou when she ran fourth last year. Battle Colours, after running second to Royal Saxon at Dunedin, again finished second behind Taboo in the Waikouaiti Cup. He will find distance an obstacle. The Hawk is not fancied in this field, but the Auckland Cup result sorts out Catkin as a possibility. Historic has not shown himself up to the class of this field, but his strong finishes at Awapuni and Marlon makes him out a likely good winner shortly. Talisker will be coupled with Vertigeru, and Beau Geste is being respected after his showing iu the New Zealand Cup. Of the others Royal Saxon, Blimp and Tori will find most favour. The former is a very consistent runner and if his win in the Invercargill Cup miles) in 2.6 1-5 under Bst 11b is his regular form* he will only need to be himself to-morrow to be in at the finish. Foxton cup revealed a likely one in Blimp and he won so well that with only 7.0 he will have to be considered. Teri is game but he has a good deal of racing of late, and this has been responsible for his dull finishes. This is a really good field and the Concen-trate-Oratrix and Talisker-Vcrtigern brackets will be attractive bets, bn*, they will not have all their own way when the field includes Royal Saxon Historic Blimp.

ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP, of 500 sovs.; 1 mile.

Crown Area 0 13 Town Bank 8 4 Panther 9 5 Apache 8 -1 King Midas 9 4 Tehcka 8 2 Ruanui 8 18 Xiimoyler 8 A Toxcunia 812 K fibrous* Ih 8 J A nolo 8 7 Inferno S 0 Full Feather 8 5 Porsaieue 8_ 0 When Crown Area won the mile event at; Riccartou in November in the good time of 1.37 4-5, he carried 8.5, but is now up to 9,13. That ho is a good niiler there is no doubt, but tin” weight is likely to stop him tomorrow. Panther has gone up -Gib on his win in the AVairarapa Cup, but that form looks good. King Midas was among the winners at Tauherenikau also, and now that he is in form he will have to be reckoned with. Rannui is a good one when she R right and her third at Alarton suggests she is coming to that point. Toxeuma can see out a mile, and the fact that he ran Aussie to a neck in the King’s Plate, there will be plenty of money for this Arrowsmith representative/ Anolo has an engagement at Ashhurst, while South Islanders will expect Full Feather, Apache, and Kilmoyler to hold their end up. The latter pair have good form too. Tehcka

Gascony: B. 11. Morris. Reremoana: L. G. Morris. Silver mine: A. McCormae. Joy King: R. Reed. Awarerc: 11. Wiggins. Cimabue: E. McTavish. Arrow Lad: T. Green. Silver Paper: J. F. McKay. Nightmarch: E. A. Keesing. Vast Acre: J. Barry, Veronese: T. Webster, Sundry Engagements.

was a good winner at Auckland, while the local trained Kilbrousyth may do better after his Australian experience. A mile will allow the big fellow to find his feet. There will be plenty of wagering in this event, with a good following for Panther i Toxeuma Raunui. TELEGRAPH HANDICAP, of 1000 sovs.; 6 furlongs. Gascony 9 3 Lysander 710 Rorcmoana 9 2 Ridgemount 7 8 Silv. Mine 9 0 Kaihoro 7 o Joy King 8 9 Consent 7 2 A ware re 8 G Banket 7 0 C.yr.abue 8 6 Veronese 7 0 Arrow Lad 8 0 Sud. Storm 7 0Silv. Gascony ran a • particularly good race in the P.N. Stakes, when ho beat Rorcmoana, and wdth any luck in the position draw, he should again head Rorcmoana. Silvermiuo’s best .at Auckland was a second to Nancy Lee on tlie opening day and third to Nancy Lee and Billikins .on the second day. A runner that is coming to form is Joy King and he will be hard to beat to-morrow, while, there arc good reports of Awarere. Arrow Lad never : ruhs a bad race, tvhilo Cimabue appears unreliable. Silver Paper beat Arrow Lad and Nightmarch at Awapuni, but the weights are in favour of Arrow Lad. Vast Acre could bo relied on last season to got at least apportion of the stake in every start, but after winning at Fcilding, he failed at Martou. He should make amends to-morrow. Lysander is now in good fettle, while Ridgemount is whispered as a possibility. Below these Kaihoro has good form, while of Consent, Banket and Veronese, the latter looks a good proposition. The draw for post, positions will sway speculators in this event and if the following arc treated well in that respect, they will be prominent. Joy King Vast Acre Arrow Lad.

The- concluding event of the first day is the usual Trentham last race puzzle and post positions will again play a prominent part. Gold Cure has paid up for Ashhurst, but it is quite possible he will take his place in this field. Iu his likely absence the best trio appear to be Millais Zippor , Bourse. THE EIDERS.
