PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH.

AUCKLAND 92 BEHIND.

HIDDLESTONE AND DEMPSTER REOPEN WELL FOR WELLINGTON

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. The Plunket Shield game, Auckland y. Wellington, was resumed this morning, in sultry weather and on a fast wicket. Auckland had scored 286 for one wicket. Player and Rowntrec started cautionsly to the bowling of McGirr and Henderson. The latter had no direction, and sent an over to Rowntrec wide off the pins. After a hyo Player got a brace. In the following over from Henderson, Rowntrec edged one, and Foley, at first slip gather a nice catch low down. 311—10 —l, The Auckland innings had lasted just over five hours. With a load of 92 runs on the first innings, Hiddlcston and Dempster opened Wellington’s second innings to the bowling of Weir and Player. Both batsmen turned Weir to the leg-side, Mills on the boundary cutting off the fours. Player struck a length and was swinging away to the off, but Hiddlcston got well -forward to the spin of the ball and drove him twice for two. From the other Weir was also doing a trifle in the air. Hiddlcstone pulled one hard and Player let it trickle through his hand for a brace. Whitlaw was the next to misficld, and lot a single away, amid chirps from the hill-siders. Both batsmen were going cautionsly. Hiddlcston pulled Player hard to the lino and reached double figures. Dempster began, to play, forcing the back shot well, but Allcott had taken a leaf from the Lowry book, and oven if the short-leg field was pierced, there was an extra man deep to save the boundary.
