GOVERNMENT SPEEDS UP LAND SETTLEMENT.
AREA ALREADY TAKEN OVER FOR CUTTING UP
ONE MONTH'S RESULTS.
■ WELLINGTON, Last Night. An indication of the Government’s policy in connection with land settlement was given by the Prime Minister to-day, when replyng to a deputation. Part of the Government’s policy, said the Prime Minister, was to take up land along the railway lines and to make it available upon easy conditions for those anxious to take up small holdings. There were a number of working men to-day who were anxious to make a start on the land and if they could be given blocks of 25 acres, 50 acres or 75 acres, it would bo all for the good of the country. In connection with that policy, the Government in the last few days had taken over a block of land for the purpose of cutting it up into blocks of from 50 to 70 acres. That was after it had only been a month in oflice. In iddition to that, the Government had ilready succeeded in raising a loan at ih per cent, with 5 per cent' discount. “They said we could not get it,” mid Sir Joseph, “but we’ve got it.”
