SKINS SOLD TO ADVANTAGE. • FORWARD SELLING OF VEAL. DEFENDED. ' 3W 'By "Telegraph—Preps Association.) ;* PAHIATUA, This Day. In regard to boneless veal, replying to a protest by the Wairarapa committee as to the action of the National Dairy Association in having sold forward skins and veal to the National Pool, Mr Brechin states that the committee is unfair in its' condemnation. The resolution carried at the annual conference, and which was quite clear, was the following: —"That the New Zealand Co-operative Producers' Marketing Board be asked to take over the control of boneless -veal on eooperative lines from the - slaughterhouse; that the National Dairy Association organise the work through committees in Pach province prior-'to slaughter." The Association had set up committees which- had. done excellent work. . It had also got into cable communication with the Marketing Association *s London office on the question of skin values. Following closely Mr Ellison's advice, tenders-were, called for the purchase, of skins, and the highest tender was accepted. This was-found to be as good as,, and probably better than, the other calf-skin contract. It stabilized the pool. •>■■ The matter of consigning or selling forward of veal, said Mr Brechin, was. a more delicate matter than that of dealing with the skins. Mr Ellison was again consulted, and the latter strongly believed that the veal should be sold forward if possible, the danger being that -if a heavy consignment of the article arrived in London unrestricted, the trade would endeavour to undermine the, market to their advantage. •Mr Ellison had indicated that a certain figure would be obtained for veal. .It would be sold, not consigned. Acting on this advice, the N.D.A. executive sold forward. Mir Brechin states that farmers will find"that no mistake has been mlade with their calves* The action of "the N.D.A. was confirmed by the secretary of the Marketing Association and Mr Edgar Harding, of Woodville v .chairman of tlie Tatter Association, who stated that the alleged Press interview does not represent hib view at all;' also, his Association hnC already made the position clear to the Wairarapa Committee. ' Mr Brechin declares that certain well-defined interests are at work, in ; Wairarapa to undermine the Market--' ing Association, also the National South Island Dairy Association. Farmers should"not remain blind to th > "niggei in the wood-pile." -
